Falls Park and Downtown Sioux Falls

While at home, I got together with Dustin to take some photos while Danielle was doing things that I wasn't invited to. We hit up a few parks in the area and went downtown for a few night shots. Temperatures were in the teens or something like that as they do in South Dakota, so we didn't make it too long after the sun went down, but we did catch some pretty cool long exposure shots downtown.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we went with Tim, Laura, Russell, and Alice to Yosemite. When we got there Thursday, it was covered in about knee deep snow. We got there pretty late that day, but got to see one of the better sunsets I've ever seen. Friday we made it back to the park and did a very short hike before the sun went away. Saturday it snowed in the park, so we just stayed at the house (which was pretty awesome). On Sunday, we went back in again to a fresh new coat of snow which somehow made the park even more beautiful. The pictures turned out pretty cool, but it would be pretty hard not to.

Photo run - Hakone Gardens, Golden Gate, Bay Bridge

I rode along with Nam yesterday out on a mission to take some pictures. We went to several places around the Bay Area, but most of the pics came from just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, or Hakone Gardens. I was looking forward to the garden myself since I hadn't gotten a chance to try out my (not-so-)fancy new macro kit, and we got there while it was still slightly misting which made for some cool shots with drops on the leaves, etc..

Muir Woods

We went to Muir Woods on Saturday for a pretty cool hike. It was ridiculously packed (for a forest) until we got through the paved "nature walk" area and into a real trail, but was a really cool trail after that.

So, I procrastinated and then eventually forgot to post the pics from Halloween here, but here they are!

Pumpkin Carving

We went over to Russell and Alice's for some pumpkin carving and eating some pumpkin stew. A good time was had by all except I think I'm done looking at pumpkins for a while now :)

In other news, we both got some new hiking shoes this weekend so now we're ready to conquer even more of the world! Too bad it's been rainy here these last two weekends.

Big Sur

We went down to Big Sur on Saturday and did a (very) small amount of hiking and some exploring of what the Pacific coast south of the Bay Area had to offer. Just like most things, probably the most enjoyable place that we went was a random stop along the way.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Danielle was sick today, but I went with Jacob over to Big Basin for a short hike through the some Redwood forest. It was great to just get out of the city for a bit. The pictures turned out horrible for the most part because it was so dark and I had to use some ridiculous ISO, but still got a few cool ones. We also had to stop for deer on the road twice on the way back so it felt a bit like home.

Fall Decor

This last weekend we went and picked apples at an orchard down in Watsonville (I'm slacking on the pictures!), so Danielle picked enough to make a pie. She also bought some fall/Halloween decor. We took some pics of both between the nail-biting innings of the Twins first postseason game(!).

P.S. And yes, I'm nerdy enough to shut off the lights and bust out the tripod for a night shot :)

Dirty, Dirty Politics

While avoiding my actual political views altogether, I'm really frustrated this year by the dirty politics happening this election season (particularly the California governor race). It's ridiculous. This is my first election season in California, so perhaps this is pretty much like normal, but it's more than I can stand. Until tonight (while I was trying to write this, ironically), I had yet to see a single ad on tv or mass mailing about why I should vote for a candidate. Every other ad - and there's been a lot! - has been about why we shouldn't vote for one of the candidates. Come on! I want to hear about something good that someone did, not just elect the one with the least dirty laundry. Ok, I'm done ranting now, but seriously, it makes me want to not vote for either side, but that means I pretty much throw away my vote in this environment.

We went to Disneyland over the weekend with Tim, Laura, Patrick, and Jen. I guess it was abnormally hot for that time of the year and we got nice and toasty waiting in line, but it was still a good time. It was also our first venture into southern California. So far I think I would prefer to stay away from that area as much as possible (too many people/cars) except for some hiking and perhaps a beach or ocean (scuba diving, anyone?!).

San Jose at Night

Tim and I went out to try to get some pics at night. It was my first time out playing with the tripod and went pretty well, but not a whole lot was happening in the city.

Almaden Quicksilver Hike

Went on a hike last night in Almaden Quicksilver Park. It was a nice hike and we made some new furry friends along the way! :)

Lake Tahoe

We went to Lake Tahoe with Tim, Laura, and Erin this weekend. The area was beautiful and since I have a shiny new camera, we came back with tons of pics. Here's a few. (more story to come after we've recovered)

Nugget Rib Cook-Off

During our trip to Tahoe, we hopped over to a small town in Nevada by Reno for a rib cook off. We had some pretty good (and by good I mean bad for you) food and went to a free Gin Blosoms concert.

Ocean Speedway Races

My second outing with the new camera on Saturday was to Ocean Speedway for some sprint car action. Was a pretty fun night except the stands were ridiculously close to the track and we got hit with flying dirt and dust during the 360 sprint cars. They also took a break halfway through the 50-lap main to work on the cars which was a little odd to me. You can also scroll down past the photo gallery for video of a lap of two of the classes that raced.

Farmer's Market

We went to a farmer's market in Sunnyvale on Saturday morning with Tim and Laura. It was my first real outing with the new camera (!) and was a pretty good success. I also got to flex some aperture muscle with the second lens I got on some fruit/veggies which was a lot of fun.
